TEMPTING PIECES OF fossilized wood are still scattered across the Petrified Forrest National Park, and it is still illegal to take any of it home...
A ranger stationed at the exit to the park will still ask you about any unauthorized "souvenirs" you happen to pick up along the way.
The park staff has encouraged the superstition that bad luck will come to anyone who steals these colorful little rocks, and every week finds another perpetrator returning his ill-gotten gain (sometimes taken decades ago).
One other thing hasn't changed.
Folks still help themselves to the forbidden rocks, removing several tons of them every year. (Gary Stanley)
