"THEREFORE, MY BELOVED, flee from idolatry..."
"Flee" is a strong word. It means to escape by running away. This calls for deliberate, strenuous, and prolonged action. By using this word, Paul is warning us that we will not free ourselves from our idols by accident; nor will we escape them by casually wishing to be better people. Moreover, he is warning that we will never be free of an idol as long as we think we an safely go back and indulge it "just for a while." A Christian who flirts with idols is every bit as foolish as a man who walks back into the den of a lion from which he has just escaped. (Ken Sande)
