JOHN A. MCARTHUR Jr., in his book Ashamed of the Gospel, wrote: "Judging from attendance figures, lots of church members feel spending the Lord's Day in church is tantamount to blowing the whole day..."
He then explained that some churches "now offer their largest services on Friday or Saturday night instead of Sunday morning. ...Non-Sunday alternative services in some churches are more heavily attended than traditional Sunday worship services... These services are usually heavy on music and entertainment (45-46).
For faithful churches, the cultural attack on the Lord's Day is a time for conviction instead of compromise. It is a time for Christian parents to say to the promoters of Sunday sports for children, "Our children go to church on Sunday."
Last week I saw a sign in a business giving the hours of opening and closing. Sunday times read, "Closed. We go to church."
The key to honoring God on the Lord's Day is not in so-called "Blue Laws." Respect for the Lord's Day comes from respect for the Son of God and a spirit of obedience to Him. (Tom Holland)
