Remind

LAST VETERANS' DAY, I bought a poppy from those nice ladies outside the post office...

That night an 18-year-old girl spotted the flower attached to my shirt pocket and asked what it was for. I was a little taken aback. Could it be that a new generation did not know of the sacrifices our veterans made in two world wars? I tried to explain the origin of the poppies. Mercifully, she did not ask me which conflict I was in. (I was in neither.) How did a new generation forget? The answer is simple; they were not taught by their elders.

The reason we observe Veterans' Day is because we forget so quickly. Humans must be taught what they owe. We need this regularly, or a day may come when a generation will not know the sacrifices of yesterday.

THOUGHT: This reminder is even more important when it comes to the historic, unique sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. If we are not reminded of this sacrifice and if we do not teach it to our children, we, too, will forget. (Stan Mitchell)

KneEmail: "Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them" (Deut. 4:9).
