IT SEEMS THAT whenever immoral practices have been outlawed, those who practice or support these immoral activities will inevitably say, "Our government shouldn't legislate morality..."
Not too ago these words were spoken with regard to the Texas sodomy laws that the Supreme Court declared were unconstitutional. Now, we're hearing the same statement made with regard to homosexual marriages. Homosexuals, we're told, should have the same right to marry as heterosexuals. "Our government shouldn't legislate morality!"
Oh really? I don't think people really mean what they say. In fact, I'm sure they don't I dare say the one who is overheard saying, "Our government shouldn't legislate morality," is glad to know that our government has established laws against cheating, stealing, robbery, rape, battery, and murder, all of which are "moral" issues.
You see, people really don't have a problem with government legislating morality. The fact of the matter is, they are glad it does. The problem comes when the government legislates against an immorality that one particularly enjoys to practice. (Steve Higginbotham)
