Second

HE WAS ONE of the most colorful generals of WWII...

George Patton swept through Europe like a gale wind with his pearl-handled revolver and his flair for publicity. Someone once asked him, "How do you do it? Where on earth does the petrol [i.e., gasoline] come from to feed your motorized columns?" "I don't know," said Patton, "I've got a chap who looks after that." Behind the vivid general there a quiet man, whose name no one knew. But he kept the whole American army moving.

THOUGHTS: The first place may be for some, but for most of us we will have to be content with the second place. But don't despise the second place. The man who helps is important too. The spotlight was often on Peter in Scripture, just because he was a leader and a real personality. It wasn't so often on Andrew, yet he played a great supporting role. Do your bit! Whether it is in first or second place, in the spotlight or "off stage," in the front line or as one of the "backroom boys," doesn't really doesn't matter. It is the job itself that is all important. (William Barclay, "Second Place," Marching Orders, 52-53).

KneEmail: "His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'" Matt. 25:21
