THE GREEK COUNTRYSIDE was in turmoil...

The Persian military had never yet been defeated. It looked hopeless. Still, Greek men gathered from Sparta, from Plataea, and from Athens. When the opposing armies met, it was disheartening. The Greeks had something just over 20,000 men; the Persians five times that many. The battle ensued. Let Will Durant tell the story:

The Persians were brave, but they were accustomed to individual fighting, and were not trained for the mass defense and attack of the Greeks. The Greeks united discipline with courage, and though they committed the folly of dividing the command among ten generals, each supreme for a day, they were saved by the example of Aristides, who yielded his leadership to Miltiades. Under this blunt soldier's vigorous strategy the small Greek force routed the Persian horde in what was not only one of the most decisive battles, but also one of the most incredible victories, of history. If we may accept Greek testimony on such a matter, 6,400 Persians, but only 192 Greeks, fell at Marathon. (Stu Weber)

THOUGHT: If we're going to survive as Christian men we have to stick together. Between marital discord, family conflict, crushing financial burdens, serious illness, a disintegrating culture, job woes, etc. what we need is contact with other brothers in Christ. Friends. Not independence.
