When one considers the tragedy of a miscarriage, one easily sees the difference between a person and mere tissue. While no one likes to go to surgery, no one mourns the loss of tonsils or a gall bladder. We do not send people to grief counseling for minor surgeries. On the other hand, when some young woman suffers a miscarriage, loved ones mourn with her and for the child. Some parents of a miscarried child mourn for many months or years. Why do they mourn if this is not a person? (Phil Sanders)
